Rosslare
The middle promontory or point. Like a lot of Irish words "Ros" has a couple of meanings, ie. Wood or shrubbery.

The Fort, The Burrow
First recorded on maps in 1599 Fortifications were put in place by the Confederate forces in the early 1640s to protect the town from attack from the sea.  Wexford was the headquarters of the Confederation of Kilkenny's naval force during the rebellion.  Attached and taken by Cromwellion forces in 1649.  The Fort was however maintained and eventually became a customs and pilot post.  The sea eventually took its toll and the Fort was abandoned in 1925.

St Brigid's Church, Strand Road
Built in 1911 of wood and iron, it was dedicated to St. Brigid by Dr. Browne, Bishop of Ferns.  Present church was built in 1976.

St Brioc's, Burrow Road
Dedicated to St. Brioc - 16th centaury saint whose feast day is on May 1st
He is reputed to have been educated by St German of Auxesse and to have spent most of his life in France where he is buried in the Cathedral of St. Brieuc in Brittany.  The water in the well is said to cure some eye diseases.

Coast Guard Station - later Guard's Barracks, Strand Road
Erected by the British Government around 1890 as a Royal Navy Reserve Base.
A drill hall was also built, later to become a Church of Ireland building. 
The gun installations were dismantled in 1914 to avoid attracting the attention of German Navy.  Only the foundation remains.
Marconi House (1874-1937), Strand Road
Italian electrical engineer, inventor of methods of communication by wireless telegraphy. 

His engineers worked at Marconi House from 1900-1914 as a link between Poldhu in Cornwall and Clifton in Galway.

Murder Hole, Strand Road
There is a strong local tradition that Cromwellian forces murdered the defenders of the Fort and others at this spot situated opposite Lambert's corner, now completely washed away by the sea.

The Pill River, Rosslare
In medieval times a tidal inlet was commonly referred to a Pole or Pill. 
Hence the Pill River at Rosslare.

Rosslare Golf Club, Burrow Road
In 1905 the Rosslare Golf Club was founded.  A pavilion was built at the back of Iona Hotel and a nine-hole course opened.  In 1925 the club moved to its present location and in 1928 an 18 hole course was opened.  The present membership is 1300.
